GEFCO Romania, the logistics firm part of GEFCO group owned by France's PSA Peugeot Citroen, is in talks with Ford Romania to transport cars from Craiova plant aimed at foreign markets by railway, according to company officials.
"At present, we already have a contract signed with Ford's new importer, but only for distribution nationwide. As regards the activity of Craiova plant, we are currently in talks with them," said Christian Zbylut, GEFCO's CEO for Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia.
This would be GEFCO's second large car transport contract, after the one signed with Automobile Dacia.
As in the case of Mioveni carmaker, GEFCO proposed the railway transportation solution, both for exports to Western Europe, and to Constan]a, as the railway infrastructure already exists inside Craiova platform.
"We proposed to Ford Romania the solution of exporting cars produced in Craiova by railway as the current road infrastructure would not cope with the high number of trucks leaving Craiova," Zbylut said.
