Only 18,000 farmers of the around 1.1 million on the Romanian market are registered as sole traders, family ventures, or trading companies, while the rest, who farm nearly five million hectares, will no longer receive subsidies from the state because they are not registered as business entities. "A recent analysis has revealed that we have very big farms, hundreds of hectares farmed by individuals, which is not the case anywhere else in Europe. Our goal is for these farms, which produce for commercial purposes, to be registered (as business entities i.e.), pay taxes to the state and receive both EU subsidies and state subsidies," announced Mihail Dumitru, Minister of Agriculture.
Ziarul Financiar has with the help of data from the Ministry of Agriculture, analysed the situation of Romanian farmers, and found that more than 88 Romanians have farms that cover between 500 and 1,000 hectares, while 20 farmers have over 1,000 hectares each, but none of them are registered as legal entities.
