Monitors with prices of below or close to 500 RON are those bringing the biggest sales in Romania, a market with low sales compared with other countries in the region, and which is shrinking, according to the data LG and Philips provided to ZF.
"For 2010, the average price for LG LCD monitors stood at 499 RON for 19-inch ones and at 539 RON for 20-inch ones," LG Romania officials told ZF.
"The average price of a monitor sold in Romania revolves around 90 euros," Cristian Bucur, sales manager for Philips monitors with MMD, told ZF. "At the average price of 90 euros, the distributor's margin of 2-3%, and the retailer's margin, of as much as 15%, are added, and then VAT is applied, yielding the final, shelf price".
In the first half of this year, monitor imports in Romania dropped to 174,000 from almost 200,000 units in 2009, according to MMD data.
In the second quarter, says Bucur, sales were largely generated by the Euro 200 governmental programme, through which low-income families get a 200-euro coupon they can use to buy a desktop and a monitor.
